Raku Vases

Vases are an excellent form for the raku firing process because they are a sturdy shape and can provide a good surface area to showcase the beautiful colors from the firing.
Because the clay is not fired to its maximum temperature, the clay body remains porous and is not ideal for holding water for more than a couple of days. (It is the same as a terra-cotta flower pot.) After that time, the water can evaporate from the piece and a small pool of water can form around the base of the vase. These pieces are best used as decoration or to hold dried flowers. They can still serve to hold a small bunch of wildflowers to enjoy for a few days- just be sure to empty the water out. These pieces serve as a wonderful conversation pieces and serve as a great addition to any collection.
